Holston River
Located just 30 minutes to the east from downtown Knoxville is TVA’s Cherokee Dam.
The Holsten River is another of the of the regions top tailwater fisheries.
The Holsten is a gentle, slow flowing river with subtle shoals and riffles divided by long stretches of flat water.
The main food sources for trout on this river are caddis, along with a nice mixture of midges and mayflies as well.
An angler will usually have an equal opportunity for taking some fish on top water as well as subsurface throughout the day.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency started a fish stocking program in the late 90’s and has continued to do so since then.
Anglers here can expect to catch some stocked fish, both rainbows and browns, along with many holdover and native fish.
The average fish here on the Holsten is in the 12 – 13 inch range. But, there are many larger fish in the river and usually several
chances at fish in the 15-20 inch range during the course of a day. And who knows maybe you’ll find one a littler longer than that.
With 20 miles of fishable trout waters, the Holsten is a great river with plenty of water and room for larger groups as well.
There are several sections of the river suitable for float/wade fishing. This is usually determined by the water release schedule.
